“Faye, wait up!”, Diana calls as she runs up, to catch up with her and Melissa. “Where were you last night?”, she asks, her question directed at Faye. “Home”, comes the simple reply. “Home? At prom night?”, Diana asks again, sure she misunderstood her friend “I thought you were going to go with Jake”, she adds.
“Yes well that didn’t quite work out”, it comes out snappy, as if she’s trying to make it clear that the conversation is over. That she doesn’t really want to get into it.
“Why? What happened?”, Diana doesn’t give up.
“He’s left. Okay? I don’t know where he is, but he didn’t show up, and he’s not answering his phone. He just left”.
The other two pause for a second, glance at each other. “Are you okay?”, Diana says after a moments hesitation.Faye sighs and stops in her tracks. “He’s left and I am certainly not fine”. The words come out as a choke. A sign of emotion, and a sign of weakness in Faye’s eyes. Brushing past Diana, she walks away, in a quick pace. Jake’s gone and Faye can’t wonder if she’s the reason why.
